Life#
Teohari Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1845 (AH 1261) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Teohari also wrote French and Greek (Rum).
Work began in Istanbul in 1866/67, at about 21, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. From 1868/69 to 1888/89 every annual entry places Teohari in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the foreign accounts office (Muhasebat-ı Ecnebiye Kalemi), from 1888/89 in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi).
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 800 in 1886/87, the peak, in the Muhasebat-ı Ecnebiye Kalemi in Istanbul, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 22 years the salaries add up to 141,720 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1888/89; the list of 1889/90 (AH 1307) gives the status word Vefat (death).
