Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1845 (AH 1261), Hasan Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Hasan had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 37, in 1881/82, Hasan began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 37 or older. Every annual entry from 1881/82 to 1901/02 places Hasan in the same post, Hizmetli, in Istanbul, the birthplace. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, 41 kept one title in one place throughout.
