Life#
Born in Kavala in 1845 (AH 1261), Ahmet Hilmi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Kavala in 1861/62, at about 16, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1862/63, with Ahmet Hilmi as Gardiyan in Kavala, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1865/66. Next came Tirana (Tiran), Keşan and Gelibolu from 1866 to 1870, then a return to Kavala from 1870 to 1878. Ahmet Hilmi then moved to Zlatograd (Darıdere) from 1878 to 1882, then Komotini (Gümülcine) from 1882 to 1901, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Soufli in 1901/02 and Chrysoupoli (Sarışaban) from 1902 to 1904. Entries spanning 43 years are rare, reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1862/63 to 675 in 1902/03, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Chrysoupoli, when three in four paid officials earned less. In all, 43 years of salary come to 266,640 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
