Life#
Ali Efendi was born in Gerede in 1845 (AH 1261), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Abaci". Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 21, in 1866/67, Ali began work in Gerede, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, places Ali in Sinop as Amele, where the entries run to 1869/70. Ali then moved to Kastamonu from 1870 to 1876, then Prijepolje (Prepol), Sofia (Sofya), Çatalca and Kastamonu, four places in five years, with a rise to central office official (Merkez Memuru) in 1877/78. The last post was in Gerede, the birthplace, in 1880/81.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to 800 in 1877/78, the peak, as Merkez Memuru in Sofia, when 68 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1880/81.
