Life#
Yakub Rıza Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1850/51 (AH 1267) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1865/66, Yakub Rıza began work in Samsun, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Yakub Rıza as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Samsun. Yakub Rıza then moved to Kastamonu from 1870 to 1875, then Mostar and Edirne from 1876 to 1881. From 1881 to 1892 every annual entry places Yakub Rıza in Ergene, with a rise to Muhabere Memuru.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 800 in 1877/78, as Muhabere Memuru in Mostar, when 68 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 475 kuruş. In all, 21 years of salary come to 122,880 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1891/92; the list of 1904/05 (AH 1322) gives the status word Vefat (death).
