Life#
Ömer Bahaettin Efendi was born in Kars in 1850/51 (AH 1267) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Ömer Bahaettin began work in Bafra in 1868/69, at about 17, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with Ömer Bahaettin as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Samsun. Next came Devrek, Bartın and Karadeniz Ereğli from 1870 to 1873, then a return to Samsun from 1873 to 1876. The annual lists then follow Ömer Bahaettin to Bafra from 1876 to 1882, then back to Samsun from 1882 to 1884, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The last posts were in Erzurum from 1885 to 1887 and Bitlis in 1887/88.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 1,140 in 1885/86, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Erzurum, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1887/88.
