Life#
İbrahim Hakkı Efendi was born in Nevşehir in 1838/39 (AH 1254), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); İbrahim Hakkı also attended the telegraph school.
Work began in Istanbul in 1870/71, at about 32, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 32 or older. The first annual entry, for 1871/72, places İbrahim Hakkı in Homs (Humus) as a central office official (Merkez Memuru). The annual lists then follow İbrahim Hakkı to Burdur in 1873/74 and Niğde in 1874/75, then Ürgüp from 1875 to 1880. The last posts were in Nevşehir, the birthplace, from 1882 to 1884, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to 700 in 1882/83, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Nevşehir, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1883/84.
