What the school was

The primary school (sıbyan mektebi) of a town quarter or village, where children from about four to six learned the alphabet, the Quran, the basics of religion, writing and arithmetic. Under Abdülhamid II the name gave way to primary school (mekteb-i ibtidai).

History

A decree of 1846 set four years of study and threatened parents who did not send a child of six to school with punishment; the regulation of 1869 kept four years and made attendance compulsory from seven for boys and six for girls. The teachers were mostly medrese graduates who served as imams or muezzins.
