Life#
Ahmet Niyazi Efendi was born in Serres (Siroz) in 1849/50 (AH 1266), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Ahmet Niyazi also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of Greek (Rum).
Ahmet Niyazi began work in Serres in 1860/61, at about 11, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 560 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 11 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1865/66, with Ahmet Niyazi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Thessaloniki (Selanik). Next came Bitola (Manastır) and Berat from 1867 to 1870, then a return to Bitola from 1870 to 1893. The annual lists then follow Ahmet Niyazi back to Thessaloniki from 1893 to 1896, then Istanbul from 1896 to 1910, with a rise to director (Müdür) in 1909/10. The last posts were in Hudavendigar from 1910 to 1912, with a rise to chief official (Başmemur). Few careers in the lists are as long; 17 of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 49 years or more.
The salary went from 560 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to 3,000 in 1910/11, the peak, as Başmemur in Hudavendigar, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1911/12.
