Life#
Born in Serres (Siroz) in 1844/45 (AH 1260), Yusuf Agâh Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Work began in Ioannina (Yanya) in 1861/62, at about 17, paid from the start, on 2,000 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1872/73, places Yusuf Agâh in Istanbul as Nafia Nezareti Insaat Meclisi Baskitabeti, where the entries run to 1875/76. Next came Thessaloniki in 1876/77, as a director (Müdür), then Bitola (Manastır) from 1877 to 1882. Yusuf Agâh then moved to Hicaz in 1882/83 and Ioannina in 1883/84. The last posts were in Thessaloniki again from 1884 to 1891. The farthest post, Hicaz, lay about 2,650 km from Serres, and fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary went from 2,500 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to 3,000 in 1876/77, the peak, as Müdür in Thessaloniki, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. On average the pay stood in the top 4 per cent of each year's paid officials; only 21 of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more stood as high. The final annual entry is for 1890/91.
