Life#
Ahmet İzzet Bey was born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1844/45 (AH 1260) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet İzzet also wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic and Greek (Rum).
Work began in Istanbul in 1862/63, at about 18, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1862/63, with Ahmet İzzet as Enderunu Humayun in Istanbul, where the entries run to 1864/65. Ahmet İzzet then moved to Beirut (Beyrut), Jaffa (Yafa), Gaza (Gazze) and Chania (Hanya), four places in seven years, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1866/67 and to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1868/69. The last post was in Kuşadası in 1873/74.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1862/63 to 1,000 in 1868/69, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Jaffa, when 70 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1873/74.
