Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1839/40 (AH 1255), İbrahim Agah Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Work began in Istanbul in 1860/61, at about 21, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1862/63, places İbrahim Agah in Latakia (Lazkiye) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). İbrahim Agah then moved to five places in ten years, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür) in 1866/67, then back to Ayvalık from 1873 to 1877. The annual lists then follow İbrahim Agah to Samsun from 1877 to 1881, then Trabzon from 1881 to 1888, with a rise to inspector (Müfettiş). The last posts were in Ioannina (Yanya) from 1888 to 1894. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1862/63 to 2,500 in 1890/91, the peak, as a chief director (Başmüdür) in Ioannina, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 33 years of salary come to 589,080 kuruş, 2.8 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. After the last annual entry, for 1893/94, the list of 1894/95 (AH 1312) gives the status word Vefat (death).
