Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1839/40 (AH 1255) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hacı Osman Nuri Efendi was the child of a district governor or lieutenant colonel (kaymakam). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Osman Nuri also attended the telegraph school.
Osman Nuri began work in Istanbul in 1858/59, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1860/61, places Osman Nuri in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi), where the entries run to 1867/68. Osman Nuri then moved to Rumelihisarı in 1868/69 and Babiali in 1869/70, then Tersanei amire from 1870 to 1877, with a rise to a post in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in 1872/73 and to a post in the Sevk Kalemi in 1876/77. The annual lists then follow Osman Nuri to Kadıköy from 1877 to 1879, then back to Rumelihisarı from 1879 to 1882. From 1882 to 1892 the annual entries place Osman Nuri again in Istanbul.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1860/61 to a peak of 1,250 in 1876/77, in the Sevk Kalemi in Tersanei amire, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1891/92; the list of 1892/93 (AH 1310) gives the status word Vefat (death).
