Life#
Mehmet Tahir Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1839/40 (AH 1255), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Tahir began work in Istanbul in 1858/59, at about 19, paid from the start, on 30 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1858/59, with Mehmet Tahir as Hademei Hassa in Istanbul, the birthplace. Mehmet Tahir then moved to Mardin, Aleppo (Halep) and Arta (Narda) from 1864 to 1868, then Metsovo (Meçova) from 1868 to 1873. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Tahir to four places in 13 years, then Servia (Serfiçe) from 1886 to 1892. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1896 to 1903, first in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi), from 1902/03 as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru). Few careers in the lists are as long; 35 of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 46 years or more. Eight provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
