Life#
Born in Kemah in 1840/41 (AH 1256) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hacı Mehmet Tevfik Efendi was the child of a postal official (posta memuru). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Mehmet Tevfik began work in Istanbul in 1860/61, at about 20, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1862/63, places Mehmet Tevfik in Amasya as 3. Posta Muduru, where the entries run to 1870/71, with a rise to 2. Posta Muduru in 1868/69. Mehmet Tevfik then moved to Zile from 1871 to 1873, then back to Amasya from 1873 to 1878, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). Next came Sivas and Trabzon from 1878 to 1887. The lists have no entry for 1881 to 1885. From 1887 to 1898 every annual entry places Mehmet Tevfik in Erzincan.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1862/63 to a peak of 1,000 in 1876/77, as 2. Müdür in Amasya, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 33 years the salaries add up to 327,000 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1897/98.
