Life#
İskender Efendi was born in Lubnan in 1840/41 (AH 1256) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); İskender also wrote Arabic.
İskender began work in Lubnan in 1866/67, at about 26, on a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1866/67, places İskender in Lubnan, the birthplace, in the Mahkeme Kalemi, where the entries run to 1874/75, with a rise to Mahkeme-i Kebir Vekili in 1868/69. The annual lists then follow İskender back to Lubnan from 1877 to 1879. The last post was in Kure in 1879/80, with a rise to district governor (Kaymakam). The lists give Lağv (abolition of the post) for 1875/76 instead of a title.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to 2,350 in 1879/80, the peak, as Kaymakam in Kure, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 13 years the salaries add up to 178,800 kuruş, 2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1879/80.
