Life#
Esat Efendi was born in Lubnan in 1850/51 (AH 1267), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Esat also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Deyrulkamer in 1869/70, at about 18, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1872/73, places Esat in Beirut (Beyrut) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1878. From 1878 to 1897 the annual entries place Esat in Bafelin, first as a chief official (Başmemur), from 1891/92 as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to a peak of 1,000 in 1891/92, as 2. Müdür in Bafelin, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 26 years of salary come to 186,240 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. After the last annual entry, for 1896/97, the list of 1897/98 (AH 1315) gives the status word Vefat (death).
