Life#
Şakir Efendi was born in Lubnan in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an army major (binbaşı). Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Şakir also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Kahramanmaraş (Maraş) in 1875/76, at about 15, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 190 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1879/80, places Şakir in Aleppo (Halep) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1881/82. The annual lists then follow Şakir to Kahramanmaraş, Kozani (Kozana), Mersin, Silifke and Bereket, five places in 12 years, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1887/88. The last posts were in Karaman from 1894 to 1899.
Pay rose from 190 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to a peak of 600 in 1887/88, as Seyyar Memur in Mersin, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 20 years of salary come to 112,800 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
