Life#
Born in Lubnan in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Reşit Efendi came from the Latin Catholic (Latin) community. Reşit had four years of schooling, at a special school (Mekteb-i Mahsusa), and wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Baalbek in 1878, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, places Reşit in Lubnan, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1892/93. Next came Jounieh (Cunye) from 1893 to 1898, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). In 1898/99 the lists place Reşit in Zahlé (Zahle).
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to 500 in 1893/94, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Jounieh, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 18 years of salary come to 80,280 kuruş, 74 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1898/99.
