Life#
Born in Diyarbakır in 1861/62 (AH 1278), İbrahim İlhami Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an imam. At about 14, in 1875/76, İbrahim İlhami began work in Tarsus, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with İbrahim İlhami as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Diyarbakır, the birthplace. Next came Harput in 1882/83. From 1883 to 1897 every annual entry places İbrahim İlhami again in Diyarbakır, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1893/94 as a chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru), from 1895/96 as an acting director (Müdür Vekili) and from 1896/97 as Başmuhabere Memuru.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 860 in 1895/96, as Müdür Vekili in Diyarbakır, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 585 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
