Life#
Abdülvahhab Efendi was born in Diyarbakır in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Abdülvahhab also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Diyarbakır in 1878/79, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with Abdülvahhab as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Diyarbakır, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1883/84. Abdülvahhab then moved to Elazığ from 1884 to 1893. The last posts were in Diyarbakır again from 1893 to 1901.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 550 in 1894/95, as Muhabere Memuru in Diyarbakır, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 104,520 kuruş, 87 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1900/01.
