Life#
Asım Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1878/79, Asım began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1881/82, with Asım as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Serres (Siroz). Asım then moved to Chios (Sakız) from 1882 to 1884, then Ayvalık from 1884 to 1889. The last posts were in Ioannina (Yanya) from 1889 to 1897.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 600 in 1889/90, as Muhabere Memuru in Ioannina, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
