Life#
Ali Galib Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ali Galib also attended the telegraph school.
At about 14, in 1876/77, Ali Galib began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1879/80, with Ali Galib as an official (Memur) in Üsküdar. The last posts were in Ioannina (Yanya) and Van from 1885 to 1889 and Bitlis in 1891/92, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1885/86.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to 600 in 1885/86, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Ioannina, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 400 kuruş.
