Life#
Ali Galip Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Ayasofya Basimami". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 17, in 1879/80, Ali Galip began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1880/81 to 1909/10 places Ali Galip in Istanbul, the birthplace, with four changes of title, from accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) to Sicil Kalemi Muduru in 1903/04.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 2,250 in 1903/04, as Sicil Kalemi Muduru in Istanbul, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 30 years the salaries add up to 393,480 kuruş, 2.3 times what an official on the median salary earned, a level reached by fewer than 7 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more.
