Life#
Ahmet Azmi Bey was born in Hersek in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a mayor (belediye reisi). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Azmi also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish and had some knowledge of French.
Work began in Shkodër (İşkodra) in 1881/82, at about 19, paid from the start, on 320 kuruş a month. From 1902/03 to 1906/07 every annual entry places Ahmet Azmi in Istanbul, first as Zabtiye Muhasebe Memuru, from 1903/04 in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi).
Pay rose from 450 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to a peak of 680 in 1905/06, in the Mektubi Kalemi in Istanbul, when 72 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
