Life#
Mustafa Mazhar Efendi was born in Hersek in 1863/64 (AH 1280), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Ceza Reisi". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Trabzon in 1879/80, at about 16, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 600 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Mustafa Mazhar in Ioannina (Yanya) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Mustafa Mazhar to Preveza (Preveze), Zlatograd (Darıdere) and Štip (İştip) from 1888 to 1893. The last post was in Besni in 1893/94.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 600 kuruş a month in 1885/86, as Muhabere Memuru in Ioannina, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1893/94. An entry in "II. Abdülhamid Dönemi Bosna-Hersekli devlet adamları" by DİLEK AKDEMİR (2018) probably refers to Mustafa Mazhar, since the name and the birthplace agree. Mustafa Mazhar probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre Hersek doğumlu Osmanlı devlet memurları" by GÖKÇE YANARDAĞ (2024) (the name and the birthplace agree).
