Life#
Hasan Tahsin Efendi was born in Hersek in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hasan Tahsin began work in Edirne in 1873/74, at about 16, with nine unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for nine years or longer. From 1881/82 to 1900/01 every annual entry places Hasan Tahsin in Çal, first as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1884/85 as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1881/82 to a peak of 600 in 1884/85, as 3. Müdür in Çal, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1900/01. An entry in "II. Abdülhamid Dönemi Bosna-Hersekli devlet adamları" by DİLEK AKDEMİR (2018) probably refers to Hasan Tahsin, since the name, the birthplace and the archive register and page agree. Hasan Tahsin probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre Hersek doğumlu Osmanlı devlet memurları" by GÖKÇE YANARDAĞ (2024) (the name and the birthplace agree).
