Life#
Born in Sivas in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet İzzet Efendi was the child of a clerk (ketebe). Ahmet İzzet began work in Sivas in 1875/76, at about 17, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1885/86, with Ahmet İzzet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Alacahan, where the entries run to 1891/92. Ahmet İzzet then moved to Sivas, Kocgiri and Alacahan from 1892 to 1896, then Kangal from 1896 to 1904. The last posts were in Ortakoy from 1904 to 1907. Fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1885/86, as Muhabere Memuru in Alacahan, when 27 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 22 years pay ended below where it began, 380 kuruş against 400; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
