Life#
İbrahim Ethem Efendi was born in Sivas in 1858/59 (AH 1275), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
İbrahim Ethem began work in Şebinkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Şarki) in 1887/88, at about 29, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. Few began so late; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 29 or older. The annual lists begin in 1887/88, with İbrahim Ethem as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Şebinkarahisar. İbrahim Ethem then moved to Diyarbakır and Mosul (Musul) from 1889 to 1894, then Sulaymaniyah (Süleymaniye) from 1894 to 1899. The last post was in Aleppo (Halep) in 1899/1900.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 540 in 1899/1900, as Muhabere Memuru in Aleppo, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 13 years the salaries add up to 56,280 kuruş, 72 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900.
