Life#
Born in Kirkuk (Kerkük) in 1879/80 (AH 1297) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, this official was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). The official had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Persian as well as Turkish.
At about 16, in 1895/96, the official began work in Mosul (Musul), paid from the start, on 180 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places the official in Mosul as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1897/98. The last posts were in Sulaymaniyah (Süleymaniye) from 1898 to 1905.
Pay rose from 180 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 400 in 1904/05, as Muhabere Memuru in Sulaymaniyah, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, ten years of salary come to 39,000 kuruş, 65 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
