Life#
Born in Kut (Kutülamare) in 1879/80 (AH 1297), Yahya Nüzhet Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Yahya Nüzhet also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Yahya Nüzhet began work in Kutul amare in 1892/93, at about 13, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Yahya Nüzhet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Mosul (Musul), where the entries run to 1897/98. Next came Al Diwaniyah (Divaniye) and Kadhimiya (Kâzımiye) from 1898 to 1903. The last posts were in Amarah (Amare) from 1903 to 1906.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to 500 in 1905/06, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Amarah, when half the paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
