Life#
Born in Erzurum in 1858/59 (AH 1275), Mehmet Şekip Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Mehmet Şekip had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1877/78, Mehmet Şekip began work in Batman, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, places Mehmet Şekip in Batman as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Mehmet Şekip then moved to Midyat, Siirt, Mosul (Musul) and Kirkuk (Kerkük), four places in six years, then back to Mosul from 1883 to 1887. Next came Sulaymaniyah (Süleymaniye) from 1887 to 1893, then a return to Mosul from 1893 to 1899. The last posts were in Sehripazar from 1899 to 1901.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to a peak of 513 in 1898/99, as Muhabere Memuru in Mosul, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 25 years of salary come to 116,088 kuruş, 75 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
