Life#
Born in Mosul (Musul) in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Syriac Christian (Süryani) community, Futuhi Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at the Katolik Mektebi; Futuhi also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 23, in 1890/91, Futuhi began work in Mosul, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1890/91 to 1898/99 places Futuhi in the same post, postal official (Posta Memuru), in Mosul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to 300 in 1898/99, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Mosul, when one in five paid officials earned less.
