Life#
Hamit Efendi was born in Mosul (Musul) in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Chaldean Christian (Keldani) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Hamit also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Hamit began work in Mosul in 1896/97, at about 18, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1902/03 and 1903/04, place Hamit in Mosul, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1902/03, as Muhabere Memuru in Mosul, when one in ten paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1903/04.
