Life#
Born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1878 (AH 1295), İshak Nesim Efendi came from the Jewish (Musevi) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). İshak Nesim had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 20, in 1898/99, İshak Nesim began work in Izmir, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1901/02, with İshak Nesim as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Tarabya. Next came a return to Izmir, the birthplace, from 1902 to 1904. The last post was in Beyoğlu in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to a peak of 450 in 1904/05, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beyoğlu, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
