Life#
Born in Çanakkale in 1878 (AH 1295), Hüseyin Mazlum Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an inspector (müfettiş). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Edirne in 1896/97, at about 18, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. From 1901/02 to 1904/05 every annual entry places Hüseyin Mazlum in İzmit, first in the office for important affairs (Mühimme Kalemi), from 1904/05 as a postal official (Posta Memuru).
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to 300 in 1904/05, the peak, as Posta Memuru in İzmit, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 6,000 kuruş, 34 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
