Behçet Cenavi Efendi

Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum). Born in Nazareth (Nasıra) in 1878 (AH 1295). On record 1901 to 1904, 3 annual entries.

Life

Born in Nazareth (Nasıra) in 1878 (AH 1295), Behçet Cenavi Efendi came from the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a finance director (mal müdürü). Behçet Cenavi had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.

At about 22, in 1900/01, Behçet Cenavi began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1901/02, with Behçet Cenavi as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Tripoli (Trablusşam). The last posts were in Jerusalem in 1902/03 and Gaza (Gazze) in 1903/04.

The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to 340 in 1903/04, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Gaza, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over three years the salaries add up to 11,280 kuruş, 63 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
