Life#
Born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1878 (AH 1295), Behor İshak Nesim Efendi came from the Jewish (Musevi) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi).
At about 20, in 1898/99, Behor İshak Nesim began work in Izmir, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1899/1900, with Behor İshak Nesim as a chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru) in Tarabya. Behor İshak Nesim then moved back to Izmir, the birthplace, from 1900 to 1904. The last post was in Beyoğlu in 1904/05.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to a peak of 450 in 1904/05, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru in Beyoğlu, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less.
