Life#
Ahmet Salim Efendi was born in Ünye in 1878 (AH 1295) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a finance director (mal müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Salim also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1893/94, Ahmet Salim began work in Fatsa, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1899/1900, places Ahmet Salim in Trabzon as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Lihne from 1901 to 1903.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to 450 in 1901/02, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Lihne, when 45 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, three years of salary come to 13,200 kuruş, 73 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
