Life#
Mehmet Tevfik Efendi was born in Ünye in 1865/66 (AH 1282), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Efkafi Humayun Muhasebe Muduru". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 24, in 1889/90, Mehmet Tevfik began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Mehmet Tevfik in Istanbul in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi), where the entries run to 1901/02, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1897/98 and to official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru) in 1901/02. The last post was in Şehzadebaşı in 1902/03.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 400 in 1901/02, as Mevrude Memuru in Istanbul, when one in three paid officials earned less. Over ten years the salaries add up to 26,160 kuruş, 43 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
