Life#
Bekir Sami Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 12 years, at the School of Commerce (Ticaret Mektebi); Bekir Sami also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish. Few officials studied at the School of Commerce (Ticaret Mektebi); only 7 of the 5,146 officials with a school did.
Work began in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 26, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 65 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, places Bekir Sami in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). From 1894 to 1907 the annual entries place Bekir Sami in Beyoğlu, first as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti, from 1905/06 as a chief official (Başmemur).
The salary went from 65 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 900 in 1906/07, the peak, as Başmemur in Beyoğlu, when 82 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
