Life#
Aleksan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Aleksan also wrote English, French and Turkish.
Aleksan began work in Istanbul in 1884/85, at about 18, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1884/85, with Aleksan as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru) in Galata, where the entries run to 1890/91. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1891 to 1897, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur).
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to a peak of 1,000 in 1893/94, as Seyyar Memur in Istanbul, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
