Life#
Süleyman Sıtkı Efendi was born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 14 years, at the School of Medicine (Tıbbiye Mektebi); Süleyman Sıtkı also wrote French as well as Turkish.
At about 17, in 1884/85, Süleyman Sıtkı began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1884/85, places Süleyman Sıtkı in Galata as a letters official (Mekâtib Memuru). Next came a return to Thessaloniki, the birthplace, from 1886 to 1893, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru), then Kuşadası from 1893 to 1898, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The last posts were in Serres (Siroz) from 1898 to 1901.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to 700 in 1893/94, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Kuşadası, when three in four paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1900/01.
