Life#
Born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1866/67 (AH 1283), Ahmet Salim Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Ahmet Salim had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Veria (Karaferye) in 1885/86, at about 19, with ten unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 2 per cent worked unpaid for ten years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Ahmet Salim in Sidirokastro (Demirhisar) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). From 1896 to 1902 the annual entries place Ahmet Salim in Veria.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1895/96, as Muhabere Memuru in Sidirokastro, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 28,080 kuruş, 66 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
