Life#
Hacı Ahmet Hilmi Efendi was born in Tripoli (Trablusşam) in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Hilmi also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Tripoli in 1895/96, at about 29, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. Fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 29 or older. The annual lists begin in 1895/96, with Ahmet Hilmi as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru) in Tripoli, the birthplace. For 1896 to 1902 the lists have no entry. Next came Damascus (Şam) from 1902 to 1905. From 1905 to 1909 the annual entries place Ahmet Hilmi again in Tripoli.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 150 kuruş a month in 1895/96, as Rüsumat Memuru in Tripoli, when 6 per cent of paid officials earned less.
