Life#
Born in Jaffa (Yafa) in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Rıza Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). Mehmet Rıza had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in the Rusumat Kalemi in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1885/86, at about 19, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1908/09, places Mehmet Rıza in Tripoli (Trablusşam) as Istimator Muavini. In 1909/10 the lists place Mehmet Rıza in Beirut, with a rise to official (Memur).
The salary went from 1,175 kuruş a month in 1908/09 to 1,300 in 1909/10, the peak, as Memur in Beirut, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
