Life#
Born in Jaffa (Yafa) in 1875/76 (AH 1292), Mişel Mihail Nahle(?) Efendi came from the Catholic Christian (Katolik) community. Mişel Mihail Nahle(?) had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Work began in Jaffa in 1891/92, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Mişel Mihail Nahle(?) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Jaffa, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1894/95. Next came Gaza (Gazze) from 1895 to 1900, then Damascus (Şam), Bekaa and Vlorë (Avlonya) from 1901 to 1906, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1902/03 and to Sef in 1905/06. The last post was in Izmir (İzmir) in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 900 in 1905/06, as Sef in Vlorë, when 83 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 700 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
