Life#
Yusuf Timur Efendi was born in Sidon (Sayda) in 1873/74 (AH 1290) into the Maronite Christian (Maruni) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Yusuf Timur also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in Sidon in 1891/92, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Yusuf Timur as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Jaffa (Yafa). Next came Nablus in 1893/94, then Gaza (Gazze) from 1894 to 1899. The annual lists then follow Yusuf Timur to Acre in 1899/1900. The last posts were in Beirut (Beyrut) from 1900 to 1903.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 400 in 1893/94, as Muhabere Memuru in Nablus, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1902/03.
