Life#
Selim Efendi was born in Damascus (Şam) in 1876/77 (AH 1293), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at the Azeriye Medresesi; Selim also wrote Arabic and French. Of the 5,146 officials with a school, no other studied at Azeriye Medresesi.
Selim began work in Acre (Akka) in 1889/90, at about 14, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Selim as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Jaffa (Yafa), with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1893/94. The last posts were in Beirut (Beyrut) from 1894 to 1898 and Damascus, the birthplace, in 1898/99.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 540 in 1898/99, as İttihat Posta Memuru in Damascus, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1898/99.
