Life#
Mehmet Resmi Efendi was born in Damascus (Şam) in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an official (memur). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Resmi also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Mehmet Resmi began work in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1904/05, at about 28, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1905/06, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Mehmet Resmi in the same post, Memur Muavini, in Beirut.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1905/06, as Memur Muavini in Beirut, when half the paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
